INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Archeology!
This course will focus on 4 main components:
(1)the history of dinosaurs
(2)an evaluation of their existence
(3)an on-site dig
(4)a final presentation
Since their discovery, dinosaurs have fascinated human beings. Their
larger-than-life existence and the mystery of the unknown contribute
to making dinosaurs among the most studied creatures to inhabit the Earth.
This course will incorporate the history, science and mythology of
dinosaurs as well as offer hands on experience. You will have the
opportunity to witness the excitement and discovery of these magnificent
creatures during an archeological dig! Throughout the year you will
study and record your findings of any skeletons and fossils. You will
also visit a truly spectacular dinosaur exhibit.
The academic standard for this lesson is 4.7. Threatened, Endangered, and
Extinct Species which states: “Pennsylvania's public schools shall teach,
challenge and support every student to realize his or her maximum
potential and to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to”:
Use the websites listed in the Process Section to help you find answers to the following:
(1)Explain the introduction of Dinosaurs to planet earth.
(2)During the peak of the dinosaur era, who was the ruler of the dinosaur
kingdom and why?
(3)What were the key components that caused the end of the “age of reptiles”?
(4)Explain the process of excavating a dinosaur skeleton.
You and your group will embark on an exhibition that will lead you to an
excavation site inorder to assist Paleontologist with their current dig.
There you will take part in the full process. Please keep a detailed journal
as well as a video blog. It is important for you to document all of your
findings. At the duration of the course you will be expected to present your
full experience. Your power point presentation will include a slideshow with
images, a live video blog as well as charts and graphs of your archeological
dig. In addition, arrange for your group to visit the Field Museum. Here
you will witness one of the most intact Tyrannosaurs Rex skeleton and watch
the 3D video, “Waking the T.REX”. This will provide your group insight on the
history of dinosaurs and a first hand look at fossils from around the world.
As you prepare for your exhibition, please be sure to bring
your laptop, camera and archeological dig kit. Bon Voyage!!

Once all of your research is complete, you and your team will will have an opportunity to present your findings.
A few reminders:
-Document your dig via video blog in order to provide feedback on each days findings.
-Clearly explain what assistance your group was able to offer daily.
-Provide images of the location site and chart you findings.
-Create a PowerPoint presentation or a iDVD slideshow to present your research.
Now that you have completed your quest I am sure you agree that few
subjects are as fascinating as dinosaurs. Studying dinosaurs helps us,
stretch our imaginations, gives us new perspectives on time and space, and
allows us to discover worlds very different from modern Earth. With the
completion of your quest , you now have a wealth of new information about
dinosaurs. With that information, perhaps you are able to answer some
frequently asked questions about dinosaurs, with current ideas and evidence
to correct some long-lived popular misconceptions. Although much has been
discovered recently about dinosaurs, there is still a great deal more to
learn about our planet and its ancient inhabitants. There are still so many
questions that are unanswered. As you reflect on what you learned, do you
feel you will continue to research dinosaurs? Wouldn’t we love to know
when dinosaurs appeared on Earth and if people and dinosaurs ever lived at
the same time. With continued research we may even find out why dinosaurs
went extinct. If you are planning on continuing your research hopefully we will
see you on our next quest!
